This 2009 Report was sent to the Sporting Rifle journal for their European Boar Review.  The resulting write-up in their March edition is the product of their editorial license to interpret!

Overview

Basswood Sporting Agency completed its 7th season hosting British guests on driven boar shoots in Croatia. We hosted 4 groups of guests, and 60% of them had been before - James W. 6 years in a row.

The total bag was impressive 83 pigs, but regretfully very unevenly divided between the groups. Group 3 shot more pigs in 3 days then the other 3 groups together. We were filmed twice for some commercial DVD to be shown at the Dortmund Fair in February. It was delightful to see and only fair, that several regular shooters finally got their trophy boar this year (well done) BSA are proud to have introduced more British shooters to Croatia then any agency and hope to continue to enjoy your support.

As something new we taking a look at Bosnia & Serbia as possible additional venues for 2010/11

BSA made a mid-January mini-foray for the hogs.  Most of the group scored, and the highlight of the visit was to see Christopher Prescott aged 19 shoot his first boar, on his first trip, with his first rifle.

THIS IS WHAT THE GROUP CAPTAINS HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE FOUR 2009 SHOOTS

1.
"Our trip started badly when Heathrow security mistook boxes of Snickers bars for a bomb. Alert over, they later proved invaluable currency for additional drives from exhausted beaters.  They had to work hard due to the low numbers of boar present, possibly due to the shirt sleeve weather we experienced throughout the trip. Whilst some of the party proved themselves boar magnets, the majority seemed to be non-magnetic.  The accommodation was good, whilst the Croatia meets England cuisine raised a few eyebrows, but no one went hungry.  Most of our party had previous BSA experience and, as a newcomer, I can now understand why they keep coming back.  Thanks Frank, and please book us in for next year.’’ Robert

"Almost our entire group had shot with BSA before, so we knew roughly what to expect from our trip.
The one thing we weren't expecting was the weather, it isn't supposed to be 16 degrees in Croatia in November!
Despite the unseasonal temperature the shooting grounds and the beaters did all they could to provide us with sport.  Our group ended up with a tally of 20 pigs between 15 guns - which under the circumstances was very good going.  The most important thing is the overall enjoyment of the trip with a great bunch of safe guns.

I shot my first pig, then second, then third.

Most, if not all, of us will back again sometime soon, hopefully with colder weather" Stuart P.

"We knocked seven bells out of the hogs and broke the regional record.  This was my 6th year shooting pigs with BSA and I am happy to report that my tally to date is 23 pigs.  I have never shot a medal-class boar but have had a Silver Medal Wild Cat.  Was very glad to see some guys on my team finally get their trophy - a couple have waited 3 years to score.

Quite a few guys gave 2009 a miss for various reasons. When they hear our results they will be rushing to join the 2010 group.  Rental buses great, better food, and we even had more time to socialise locally.

Good year, well done BSA, see you in November." Chumley

" A really great bunch of guys getting on well together and being true sportsmen.  Had a marvelous time despite a modest pig count.  A truly memorable shooting break.

As a PH I recognise that at times things do not totally work out as hoped or planned. Only few of the group showed disappointment, though, and most are up for it again.  With a holiday like this, the hunt is obviously important, (the main event) but is not that enjoyable without a good venue, good company, interesting foods, plenty to drink and great fellowship.  BSA delivers on all of these.

This was my 4th visit to Croatia, I have noted significant changes:  the value of the Kuna, annual increases in costs, and the attitude of some people are of concern." Louis
